The Cathedral was built in the sixth century on the site of an earlier temple dedicated to Athena and dating from the fifth century BC. Of this ancient building were some columns belonging to the peristyle. The Church has been subjected to restoration interventions over the centuries and at the end of the seventeenth century was severely damaged by an earthquake. The facade, richly decorated, was built in the eighteenth century by Andrea Palma. The bottom has three portals separated by columns, while at the top is the statue of the Virgin of Piliere, within a niche. On the sides of the facade are placed statues depicting Saint Lucia and San Marziano, all works eighteenth Ignatius Marabitti, as the sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul to the sides of the stairs in front of the facade. The interior is composed of three naves, of which the central presents a sixteenth-century wooden ceiling. Along the aisles are various chapels, including that of seventeenth-century crucifix, the sacrament frescoes in the seventeenth century by Agostino Scylla and dedicated to Saint Lucia which preserves the sixteenth century statue of the Saint, patron of the city.
